The Lumbee Tribe has purchased 240 acres in Robeson County, North Carolina, shortly after receiving full federal recognition from Congress in December 2025.
The property, located near Interstate 95, could serve as a site for a casino or other commercial development, though no final plans have been announced. The site could also potentially include betting kiosks, reflecting the growing popularity of legalized North Carolina sports betting.
Tribal Plans Under Review
Tribal leaders have emphasized that the property’s future will be determined through a referendum of tribal members.
While a new North Carolina casino is one possibility, other uses, including entertainment, retail, or industrial development, remain under consideration. Officials have said that any plans will comply with state and federal regulations and will seek to balance economic development with community needs.
Federal Trust Status
The tribe is pursuing federal trust status for the land, a legal process that provides protection against private claims and local zoning restrictions. This status is typically required before tribal land can be developed for gaming operations under federal law.
First-Ever Casino East of Charlotte Could Attract Visitors
If a casino is developed, it would be the first east of Charlotte. North Carolina currently hosts three tribal casinos: Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee, Harrah's Cherokee River Valley Casino, and Catawba Two Kings Casino, while neighboring South Carolina has no legalized casinos.
Observers note that a new casino in Robeson County could draw visitors from across the region.
