The North Carolina Education Lottery reported a $1 million Powerball win and launched four new scratch off games in August. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission oversees both the state's lottery operations and North Carolina sports betting.
Elizabeth City Woman Wins $1 Million Powerball Prize
Janet Cornelius of Elizabeth City won a $1 million Powerball prize with a $2 ticket purchased at the Hop-In Citgo on North Road Street in Pasquotank County.
Cornelius matched all five white balls in August 12's Powerball drawing, giving her a prize with odds of 1 in 11.6 million. She later claimed the prize at lottery headquarters. After state and federal tax withholdings, Cornelius received $720,100. The NC Lottery announced her win on August 14.
Lottery Launches First $30 Scratch Off
The NC Education Lottery also introduced four new scratch off games on August 4. The lineup includes the first $30 game the lottery has offered, titled Massive Cash Blowout.
The game launched with more than $70 million in total cash prizes. It has 3,879 top prizes of $3,000 and overall odds of winning any prize of 1 in 9.37. The lottery describes the ticket as packed with $150, $300 and $3,000 prizes.
Three $1 and $5 games also joined the lineup. Hit $50! is a $1 game that offers instant $50 cash wins. The $5 Loteria Grande features two playing boards and a bonus game, while $5 Cash gives players a chance to win all 12 featured prizes on one ticket.
The lottery lists three top prizes of $200,000 on $5 Cash with overall odds of 1 in 4.13, five top prizes of $150,000 on $5 Loteria Grande with overall odds of 1 in 3.86, and five top prizes of $5,000 on $1 Hit $50! with overall odds of 1 in 4.92.
The four new games expand the lottery's scratch off lineup alongside Powerball and other draw games.
