North Carolina sports betting generated about $718 million in wagers in September, according to a revenue report released in late October by the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. That is the highest monthly total of the new fiscal year so far, up about 38% from the $520 million wagered in August.
September Sets New Fiscal-Year High for Wagers
The September total includes both paid wagers and promotional wagers. Promotional wagers are bets placed with bonuses or credits, such as those offered through North Carolina sportsbook promos. Promotional wagering reached about $27 million in September, more than double the $12 million recorded in August. September topped July, which had been the high point of the fiscal year at about $566 million. The month included the start of the NFL regular season.
North Carolina Bettors Won Back About 90 Cents on the Dollar
Bettors won about $648 million in September. That works out to roughly 90 cents returned in winnings for every dollar wagered across the state. This is a statewide average, not a guaranteed return or the experience of any individual bettor.
Gross wagering revenue came to about $65 million, up 33% from about $49 million in August. That was a slower increase than the 38% growth in wagers. The hold, or gross wagering revenue as a share of total wagers, was about 9.1%, compared with 9.4% in August and 11.2% in July. The July comparison shows the same pattern. Wagers climbed about 27% from July, while gross wagering revenue increased only about 3%.
Tax Proceeds Top $14 Million Again
State law sets a 23% tax on gross wagering revenue, which is the wagers an operator receives, including promotional credits, minus winnings paid out. Estimated tax proceeds for September came to about $15 million, collected by the N.C. Department of Revenue.
That compares with about $11 million in August and $14 million in July. Across July, August and September, NC betting apps have taken in about $1.8 billion in wagers. Those wagers produced roughly $177 million in gross wagering revenue and an estimated $40 million in tax proceeds.
