North Carolina Wagering Ends Fiscal 2026 With $7.62 Billion Wagered

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission posted its June 2026 sports wagering revenue report on July 15, 2026, closing out the state's 2026 fiscal year. North Carolina sports betting recorded $7.62 billion in total wagers over the 12 months from July 2025 through June 2026, based on figures licensed operators reported to the commission.

The Fiscal 2026 Totals

The commission listed $7,623,390,043 under total wagering revenue, its term for paid wagers plus promotional wagers. Of that, $229,169,425 was promo wagering revenue, which the commission defines as the amount of promotional funds used by players in North Carolina. Players were paid $6,784,258,235 in winnings and gross wagering revenue came to $794,751,177.

The commission reports those items separately, along with a cancelled and void wagers column, so gross wagering revenue is not a straight subtraction of winnings from wagers.

What the State Collected

Estimated tax proceeds for fiscal 2026 totaled $143,055,213. The commission describes that as the estimated amount the state will collect from the taxation of gross wagering revenue at 18%. The 18% rate applied all year.

How June Finished

In June, players wagered $589,604,507 through licensed NC betting apps and were paid $530,262,531 in winnings. Gross wagering revenue for the month was $54,140,105 and estimated tax proceeds were $9,745,219. May produced $578,070,325 in total wagering revenue and $64,318,908 in gross wagering revenue.

A Higher Rate Applies Going Forward

Section 44.7(a) of Senate Bill 257, the 2026 Appropriations Act, raises the sports wagering tax paid by operators from 18% to 23% beginning July 1, 2026, according to the General Assembly's fiscal summary of the budget. Governor Josh Stein signed Senate Bill 257 into law on July 7, 2026, a week after fiscal 2026 ended on June 30.

The General Assembly projects $206 million in sports wagering revenue for fiscal 2026-27 under the new rate and distribution formula, compared with $161.2 million under previous law. None of that affects the fiscal 2026 totals above, which were calculated at 18%.
