Charlotte Hornets Reshape Roster: A Look at the 2026 Overhaul
Editorial Staff Profile Picture

In the span of roughly one week, the Charlotte Hornets reshaped their roster with two blockbuster trades, two first-round draft picks and a key free-agency re-signing. Together, the moves point toward a younger, more versatile team built around draft assets and future flexibility, and they're already a talking point in the North Carolina sports betting market heading into 2026-27.

The LaMelo Ball Trade

The centerpiece move came first. Charlotte sent guard LaMelo Ball and forward Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a package centered on big man Naz Reid. Beyond Reid, the Hornets received a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, and three future second-round picks (2029, 2032 and 2033). The return in future assets gives Charlotte multiple avenues to add talent through upcoming drafts.

The Miles Bridges Deal

Just days after the LaMelo trade, Charlotte sent forward Miles Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick to the Phoenix Suns. Coming back were guard Grayson Allen, wing Royce O'Neale and an unprotected 2033 first-round pick. The move added veteran depth and outside shooting to a roster built around younger players.

Coby White Re-Signs

Alongside the trades, one of Charlotte's most important moves was re-signing guard Coby White. The Hornets brought him back on a three-year, $74 million contract, giving the roster a proven, established lead guard to build the backcourt around.

2026 NBA Draft: Two First-Round Selections

The Hornets used both first-round picks on high-upside prospects with a shared background: both were part of Germany's silver-medal run at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup and were named to the tournament's All-Star Five.

At No. 14, Charlotte selected Hannes Steinbach, a 6-foot-11 forward-center out of the University of Washington who averaged 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 57.7% from the field in his freshman season, earning All-Big Ten honors. At No. 18, the team added Christian Anderson Jr., a guard from Texas Tech who averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 assists and shot 41.5% from three.

Projected Starting Five and New-Look Roster

With the offseason moves in place, the projected Hornets starting five lines up as: Coby White at point guard, Kon Knueppel at shooting guard, Brandon Miller at small forward, Naz Reid at power forward and Moussa Diabaté at center.

Knueppel, who led the NBA with 273 made three-pointers on 42.7% shooting as a rookie and finished as Rookie of the Year runner-up behind Cooper Flagg, slots in as one of the team's top perimeter threats. The second unit features Allen, Anderson Jr., O'Neale, Sion James and Steinbach, with Grant Williams providing additional frontcourt depth.

What It Means for North Carolina Bettors

Heading into the 2026-27 season, Charlotte's roster changes are one of the more notable storylines in the Eastern Conference. Hornets playoff odds will likely reflect a team still a year or two away from its ceiling, with the accumulated draft assets and younger core suggesting a deliberate, multi-year path toward contention rather than an immediate one. Bettors tracking that timeline on NC betting apps should expect the odds to shift gradually as the young core develops.
