Can the Panthers Pull Off a Major Upset Sunday?
Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

In what many prognosticators think is just an inevitable rout becoming official, the Dallas Cowboys (6-3) will visit the Carolina Panthers (1-8) Sunday. Legal North Carolina sports betting is still months away, but the odds nationally are stacked against the home Panthers.

Over at the new ESPN BET Sportsbook, the Cowboys are heavy 10.5-point and -525 moneyline favorites over the Panthers (+400). The game's over/under total is 42.5 points. When online wagering does begin in the state, look out for a ESPN BET North Carolina promo code

Everything points the way of a Dallas victory, but does Carolina have a shot to hang in there and pull it out at the end in front of the home crowd?

To analyze that, BetCarolina.com – your source for NC sports betting apps - looked at how Dallas fared against teams .500 and under and how Carolina did against teams .500 or better this season. The contrast is evident.

Dallas Cowboys

Here is how Dallas has handled inferior competition this season. The teams are .500 or worse. The exception to the trend is in boldface.

  • Cowboys 40, Giants 0
  • Cowboys 30, Jets 10
  • Cardinals 28, Cowboys 15
  • Cowboys 38, Patriots 3
  • Cowboys 20, Chargers 17
  • Cowboys 43, Rams 20
  • Cowboys 49, Giants 17

The Cowboys have posted a 6-1 record, with five of those victories by a margin of 20 points or more, highlighted by a 40-0 home win over the New York Giants in the season opener. The one blemish: an inexplicable road loss to the Arizona Cardinals two weeks later.

Carolina Panthers

Here is how Carolina has performed against good teams this season. The teams are .500 or better. The exception to the trend is in boldface.

  • Saints 20, Panthers 17
  • Seahawks 37, Panthers 27
  • Vikings 21, Panthers 13
  • Lions 42, Panthers 24
  • Dolphins 42, Panthers 21
  • Panthers 15, Texans 13
  • Colts, 27, Panthers 13

The Panthers are a dismal 1-6 against teams .500 or better and have lost four of those games by 10 points or more, including a 42-21 road loss at the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 15. That tells you about all you need to know about the Panthers’ playoff chances. The one positive: a 15-13 home win against the Houston Texans off the bye week on Oct. 29.

All-Time Series History

Dallas leads the all-time series, 10-3, but the Panthers have won two of the past three contests. In their last regular season meeting, the Cowboys won, 36-28, at home on Oct. 3, 2021. The Panthers are 2-0 against the Cowboys all-time in the postseason.

With an early kickoff, a home game and no love lost between the two teams, Carolina has a shot . . . maybe for a half. BetCarolina.com will keep a close eye on the Panthers and the state’s other teams as well as be there with top North Carolina sportsbook promos.
