UNC, Wake Forest Among Power 5 College Football Teams On Week 2 Upset Alert
Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

We’ve officially reached the second full week of the 2023 college football season across North Carolina sports betting, with North Carolina’s four ACC members all starting the year 1-0. Between the UNC Tar Heels’ 31-17 rout of South Carolina, Duke’s 28-7 upset win over Clemson, Wake Forest's 37-17 win over Elon and NC State’s 24-14 win over UConn, it’s been a banner start to the year in North Carolina.

Two of those four face daunting tests this weekend, however, with UNC hosting App State, while Wake plays host to Vanderbilt. Ahead of the weekend, BetCarolina.com constructed hypothetical odds on which Power 5 CFB teams are the most likely to be upset in Week 2. The only games that were included were if the spread of the game was either 10 points or more.

While you won't find these odds on North Carolina betting apps, this is just the type of research that can prepare you for the apps launch early next year.

UNC, Wake Forest On Upset Watch?

The No. 2 upset contender this weekend is the Demon Deacons, who began the year with a 37-17 shellacking of local FCS program Elon in Week 1. The Demon Deacons host a Commodores squad that has wins over Hawaii (35-28) and Alabama A&U (47-13), with a rocket-armed quarterback in sophomore AJ Swann.  Wake Forest and Vanderbilt have met 17 times over the years, with the Demon Deacons going 7-10 against the Commodores during that stretch, including last year’s 45-25 win in Nashville.

Up the road in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels host in-state foe, App State, in a Saturday matinee that kicks off at 5:15 p.m. local time. The Mountaineers enter Saturday’s showdown with the Tar Heels fresh off a 45-24 win over Gardner Webb of the FCS, in the third showdown all time between the two schools.

App State knocked off UNC in their last showdown in 2019, 34-31, despite getting outgained 469-385, thanks to forcing three Tar Heel turnovers in the contest. Fast forward three years and the Mountaineers are hellbent on doing the same thing to their in-state rivals on Saturday. App State will need to pull off a shocker (again) to one-up their 2019 performance. You can find all UNC football odds here throughout the season.

Over in Winston-Salem, the Demon Deacons  enter Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff as a 10-point favorite on BetMGM Sportsbook NC, to go with a moneyline of -450 in favor of Wake Forest. Both N.C. schools should keep their heads on a swivel, however, as we give their foes +700 (Vanderbilt) and +1250 (App State) to pull off an upset on Saturday.
