As conference play heats up, many big games are impacting the 2024 March Madness odds

  • No. 1 UConn Huskies won convincingly vs. No. 4 Marquette over the weekend after blowing out DePaul, resulting in the Huskies earning the unanimous No. 1 overall ranking this week.
  • No. 2 Houston Cougars coasted to victory vs Texas and moved up to the No. 2 team in the country.
  • No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers were upset by Ohio State over the weekend, ending a nine-game winning streak and sliding to No. 3 in the AP Polls.

  • No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers bounced back with blowout wins against SEC rivals Arkansas and Vanderbilt after falling to Texas A&M the previous week.
  • No. 8 Duke Blue Devils quietly picked up their fourth win in a row, defeating Florida State on the road. Duke is only a half-game behind UNC in the ACC standings.
  • No. 10 North Carolina beat Virginia Tech at home but dropped another ACC matchup to Syracuse. UNC has now lost 3 of their last 6 games, all against unranked opponents.

Who has the Best Odds to Win March Madness?

UConn Huskies team celebrates after victory with coach Dan Hurley

The defending champion UConn Huskies (+500) have the best odds to win March Madness. This gives the Huskies an implied probability of 16.7% to win the 2024 College Basketball National Title.

UConn is led by coach Dan Hurley and has a balanced roster, with five players averaging double figures in points scored per game. They are led by guard Tristen Newton with 15.8 PPG. The Huskies are 24-2 and in first place in the Big East. They play their home games in Storrs, Connecticut at Gampel Pavilion.

The Purdue Boilermakers (+700) have the next best odds to win the NCAA Tournament. The Boilermakers have four wins against top-15 opponents, including a win vs No. 1 ranked Arizona in December. The Boilermakers are top-10 in scoring and deploy a dominant big man in Zach Edey who is a heavy favorite for the Wooden Award.

NCAA National Title Odds Over Time

The Kentucky Wildcats opened the season as the favorites at around +1400 odds but were overtaken by Purdue and UConn. Gonzaga is a team that is always highly rated but has fallen off with odds of 90-1 to win the title currently, after opening in the 20-1 range.

Houston and Tennessee are two other teams that have risen up the odds boards after opening 20-1 and 30-1, respectively.

March Madness Favorites: Best Chance At The Final Four

Purdue Boilermakers' Zach Edey celebrates victory

UConn (+500)

Dan Hurley and the Huskies have followed up their national championship with a terrific 20-2 start to the season. They have beaten No. 15 Texas, No. 9 UNC, No. 10 Gonzaga, and No. 18 Creighton already this season.

  • Strengths: Average 86.1 points per game, 37th in the nation. With five players averaging double-digits in scoring, they are very well-balanced.
  • Weaknesses: FT% of 77.2%. Something that could hurt them in a close tournament game.

Purdue (+700)

The Boilermakers (23-3) have been a contender ever since center Zach Edey has been on the roster. Head coach Matt Painter's team has already beaten No. 11 Gonzaga, No. 7 Tennessee, and No. 4 Marquette this season, in addition to topping No. 1 Arizona 92-84 on Dec. 16, 2023.

  • Strengths: 85.8 PPG (10th). This team is capable of outscoring almost any team in the country.
  • Weaknesses: FT% of 71.7% (173rd). Big man Zach Edey isn't a terrific free-throw shooter, and neither is the rest of the team.

Houston (+900)

The Cougars have been ranked highly the past few seasons under head coach Kelvin Sampson. Jamal Shead and L.J. Cryer lead a team that is 22-3, but has only beaten two ranked teams -- No. 25 Texas Tech and No. 21 BYU -- all season.

  • Strengths: 54.0 PPG allowed. Houston is No. 1 in the country in points allowed, which means they don't have to score that much to win.
  • Weaknesses: 73.6 PPG. The Cougars are 210th in points scored, which means they may have trouble pulling away from teams come tourney time.

March Madness Contenders: Elite Eight/Sweet Sixteen Teams To Watch

North Carolina (+1800)

UNC is a veteran team, led by head coach Hubert Davis and Armando Bacot. The 20-6 Tar Heels just beat No. 7 Duke at home 93-84 and have five wins over Top 25 teams.

  • Strengths: 21.3 PPG from RJ Davis. Having a go-to scorer in the NCAA tournament is great for a veteran team, especially one that can fall back on Bacot and others as well.
  • Weaknesses: 21.7 3-pointers attempted per game. The Tar Heels don't take (or make) a ton of 3-pointers.

Kansas (+2000)

Head coach Bill Self has won the title before in Lawrence and has a group that could win one again this season. Guard Kevin McCullar Jr. and center Hunter Dickinson lead a team that is 20-6, with several big wins already this season.

  • Strengths: 20.7 assists per game. The Jayhawks are second in the nation in assists.
  • Weaknesses: 37.1 rebounds per game. Kansas is only 135th in rebounds per game, always a potential issue in a close tourney game.

Kentucky (+2500)

Head coach John Calipari always has a great recruiting class, and this season is no different. Led by Antonio Reeves, the Wildcats are currently 18-7 and tend to get better as the season progresses.

  • Strengths: 88.8 PPG. The Wildcats are fourth in the nation in scoring -- when in doubt, they can outscore just about anyone.
  • Weaknesses: 19.1 FT attempted per game. Kentucky is 185th in free throws attempted, which could be a problem if the shots aren't falling.

March Madness Cinderellas: Longshots Poised To Go On A Run

Michigan State (+5500)

Tom Izzo's teams always seem to be peaking come March Madness, and few coaches have as much tournament experience.

  • Strengths: 17.5 APG. The Spartans share the ball well, as they're 23rd in the nation in assists per game.
  • Weaknesses: 35.1 rebounds per game. Tied for 149th in the country, Michigan State doesn't rebound particulary well as a team.

Gonzaga (+8000)

Mark Few's team is used to making deep runs in the NCAA tournament and even though this season hasn't gone as planned, they could be dangerous once in the tourney.

  • Strengths: 84.2 PPG. The Bulldogs (18th in the nation) can score with most teams.
  • Weaknesses: 7.4 3-point FGs made by opponents per game. The Bulldogs give up more 3s than you'd like for a potential contender.

Florida Atlantic (+10000)

Remember them from last season? The Cinderella team that made the Final Four returns a ton of talent, including Johnell Davis and Bryan Greenlee for head coach Dusty May.

  • Strengths: 83.4 PPG. The Owls are 20th in the nation in scoring, and we know they can do it against the best competition.
  • Weaknesses: 2.8 blocks per game. The Owls are 265th in blocks per game, due to lack of size against bigger teams.

March Madness Predictions: Who Will Cut Down The Net In Glendale?

As of now, the defending champion UConn Huskies and the Purdue Boilermakers are two teams that appear to have a great chance to win it all.

However, perception is not always reality and this is March Madness we are talking about.

Only seven programs have ever won consecutive NCAA Tournaments and only two have won in consecutive seasons in the modern era. (Duke: 91-92, Florida: 06-07)

There are a variety of talented teams this season with an opportunity to cut down the nets, but no clear-cut favorite like in previous seasons. If Kentucky or Kansas can continue to improve as we get closer to the tournament, they'll have a great chance as well but a lot will depend on the potential matchups in the tournament and how injuries shake out.

I will be revisiting this as we approach the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

How To Bet On March Madness

There are a variety of ways to bet on March Madness, including teams to win it all and individual game-by-game spreads. You can also bet on teams strictly to make the Final Four, rather than win it all, and prop bets.

March Madness Futures

March Madness futures are fun to play because they allow you options to bet on a variety of teams. If you have a few long-shot teams and one or two of them make it to the Sweet 16 or Elite Eight, you have great hedging opportunities. Or you can bet on second-tier contenders to win it all, like Marquette (30-1) and Illinois (35-1).

March Madness Spreads

March Madness spreads are exciting because they are available on every game. You are betting on which team will cover the spread, not win the game outright, so even a 16-seed has a chance to cover against a No. 1 seed, for example.

March Madness Props

March Madness Prop bets allow you to bet on specific things for players in games, such as how many rebounds or points a player will have. You can bet on Purdue's Zach Edey to go over/under 17.5 points, for example. This allows bettors to exploit certain matchups within the game.

March Madness Bracket Challenges

March Madness bracket challenges are a fun way to get a little skin in the game. You select the winner of all 63 games of the tournament before it begins and then get to follow along as the tournament rolls along.
