Who has the Best Odds to Win the Wells Fargo Championship?
Currently, Scottie Scheffler has the best projected odds to win the Wells Fargo Championship. We haven't seen a golfer dominate the betting so much since Tiger Woods. Scheffler will likely be available for the Wells Fargo Championship around the best sportsbooks at +400 or so following his second Masters win.
The Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club is a test, a golf course that demands strong golf ball driving. Power over precision is the brief, but rough can be up. Approach shots will be key, and, currently, Scheffler ranks first in Approach to the Green.
Scheffler looks like he's going to win every time he pegs it up now and has 4 wins in his last 9 starts. If he doesn't win, he comes close.

Wells Fargo Championship Favorites
Let's look at the top of the market to see the likely front runners to challenge Scottie Scheffler in the Wells Fargo Championship 2024.
π MORE: North Carolina Sports Betting Promos
Rory McIlroy (+1000)
McIlroy's hype for the Masters (and the grand slam) once again didn't live up to expectation but he is a three-time winner at Quail Hollow. McIlroy's sole victory so far this year came on one of the DP World Tour tournaments, ultimately taking home the spoils in Dubai.
π Strengths
Total driving is a key stat for Quail Hollow Club, and the Irishman leads that category.
π Weaknesses
Strokes gained around the green and putting have been two areas McIlroy has struggled in this year with an average ranking of around 100.
Collin Morikawa (+2000)
It's been a slow season for the two-time major champion. But having made the cut at the Masters, Morikawa put in a good Round 3 to be in a position to contend. He eventually finished tied for third, which should be a confidence boost considering he was only just behind the world's No. 1 player.
π Strengths
Morikawa usually excels with the irons, albeit he is a lowly 80th in approach this year, hence why he's had a quiet season.
π Weaknesses
Morikawa's chipping and putting are a weakness; indeed, he's 164th in the latter category this year. He'll need a hot flatstick for Quail Hollow.
Max Homa (+2000)
There's a theme of slow starts to the season here, but Homa finished tied for third at the Masters. The two-time Wells Fargo Champ will be ready to rock again at Quail Hollow.
π Strengths
Tee-to-green game is king for Homa, and that's what he'll need at Quail Hollow Club. Homa was 15th in tee-to-green performance on the PGA Tour in 2023.
π Weaknesses
There are no real weaknesses in Homa's game, although 92nd in proximity won't get the job done into the large elevated greens at Quail Hollow Club.
Wells Fargo Championship Contenders
The field is strong at the Wells Fargo Championship as it is a Signature Event. So, generally, I will be looking at a big name on the winner's check.
Below, I'll discuss some potential first-time winners of the event at decent prices.
Xander Schauffele (+1600)
Schauffele has some form at the Wells Fargo Championship and has looked strong this season with lots of top 5s and top 10s, most recently at the Masters. Coming in tied for second at the Players Championship was a big plus for Schauffele, who shot the lowest score over 72 holes last year at the PGA Tour championship.
π Strengths
Schauffele is very strong off the tee, which is great for Quail Hollow. He ranks 6th in total driving and 2nd in strokes gained tee to green.
π Weaknesses
Putting has been a weakness for Schauffele in the past. On the greens at Quail Hollow, you need to be able to hole out from 4-8 feet out. Schauffele ranks 93rd in putting from that range.
Justin Thomas (+2800)
Thomas has had somewhat of a return to top form this year despite some erratic results. He missed the cut at the Masters and the Players Championship despite starting the season strong.
π Strengths
Strong course fit is vital, and Thomas excels in total driving and launches it high from approaches. He won the PGA Championship on the Quail Hollow course for these reasons back in 2017.
π Weaknesses
Thomas is down near the bottom of the field in the strokes gained putting stats. It's hard to get into contention in a major championship if the flatstick isn't behaving.
Hideki Matsuyama (+3300)
Matsuyama has a penchant for winning on a particular style of course on tour, and Quail Hollow is the only one of 5 or 6 of that type he's failed at so far. Matsuyama has come close, and we saw a return to the form of old for the Japanese player when he flew through the field in Round 4 to win The Genesis.
π Strengths
Total driving and proximity with the irons are the skills I look for when playing Quail Hollow. He's 26th in proximity to the hole and 3rd in strokes gained tee to green.
π Weaknesses
A 1-putt percentage ranking of 130th might be his Achilles' heel.
Wells Fargo Championship Longshots
There's some serious depth in this Wells Fargo Signature Event field, so we certainly can't discount players at the longer odds.
It might pay to keep an eye on former course winners such as Jason Day.
Jason Day (+3300)
Day is another player who has had a resurgence in 2024 with a trio of Top 10 finishes. He posted a respectable Top 30 at the Masters.
π Strengths
Day is a former winner of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow, and there's no substitute for course history as strong as that.
π Weaknesses
Day has become very meticulous, which has been detrimental to his game. He's one of the slowest players on tour.
Shane Lowry (+4000)
Lowry has had a solid season with a few Top 5 performances but hasn't reached the heights he's capable of yet. It's time for the big man to take a step in the right direction at Quail Hollow Club.
π Strengths
Top ball striking from Lowry has him ranking 25th in Total Driving and 3rd in approach the green, making his profile stand out for the Wells Fargo.
π Weaknesses
Lowry struggles in short putting, like Schauffele, and a ranking of 171st from inside ten feet isn't fun.
Sahith Theegala (+4500)
Theegala's highlights this season include 2nd at the Sentry, 5th in Phoenix, 6th at Bay Hill, and 9th at the Players Championship after the 26-year-old nabbed his first PGA Tour victory at the back end of last year.
π Strengths
A big booming fade is a go-to shot now on some holes at Quail Hollow after some restructuring over the past several years. Theegala ranks 6th in longest drives using this technique.
π Weaknesses
He could stand some work on the wedges, ranking an average of nearly 100th in the short-arm approaches to the cup.
Wells Fargo Betting Trends: Past Odds of Wells Fargo Champions
Year | Winner | Pre-Tourney Odds |
---|---|---|
2023 | Wyndham Clark | +6600 |
2022* | Max Homa | +4000 |
2021 | Rory McIlroy | +1600 |
2019 | Max Homa | +30000 |
2018 | Jason Day | +2000 |
*Championship was held at TPC Potomac in 2022
It's hard to oppose a player like Scottie Scheffler, but there is an obvious trend over the years here for repeat winners at Quail Hollow. Players that fall into that bracket include Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and JB Holmes.
Anthony Kim, Lucas Glover, Paul Casey and Vijah Singh have also thrived here.
All these guys have strong course history, and I'll be looking to back them in the hope they chin the favorite. If you see the names in question, they are all similar players in terms of course fit.
All of them favor length over accuracy, and Quail Hollow is a bomber's course where golfers have to avoid a bogeyβpar is good!

Scottie Scheffler is favorited to win the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. Scheffler's projected +500 odds make him the short-priced betting favorite to win yet another major PGA Tour event this season. He's been the world's No. 1 golfer since 2022.
Rory McIlroy's projected odds to win the Wells Fargo Championship are +1000. McIlroy has won multiple tournaments at Quail Hollow Club throughout his career, including his first-ever PGA Tour victory in 2010 and a record-setting 11-under-par total of 61 in 2015.
Wyndham Clark won the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship, shooting -19 to beat out Xander Schauffele, Harris English, and Tyrell Hatton. Clark, a tee-to-green specialist, went on to win the US Open later in the 2023 season in L.A.
