Duke came off its best season in 8 years and returned an ACC-high 17 starters (nine on offense, eight on defense). They won the Birmingham Bowl vs. Troy to close out the season.
Junior Riley Leonard came back for his third year under center for the Blue Devils, throwing for over 1,100 yards and three touchdowns this season. Unfortunately, Leonard suffered an injury against Louisville on Oct. 28, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. He is now transferring to Notre Dame.
Duke head coach Mike Elko was hired by Texas A&M after just two seasons with the Blue Devils. In those two seasons, he went 16-9 (64% win percentage).
Needless to say, this Duke team will look massively different in 2024.
Duke vs. UNC Football Recap
UNC beat Duke on Senior Night in the latest installment of this rivalry. The game went into double overtime, with UNC ultimately winning 47-45. The two teams combined for 39 points in the fourth quarter before UNC sealed the win on a two-point conversion in the second OT.
That win—along with the rest of his 2023 season—was enough to propel UNC QB Drake Maye's draft odds up the board, and he's now declared for the NFL Draft.

The beginning of the Mike Elko era was a resounding success in Durham as Duke finished 9-4 in his first season at the helm last year, the Blue Devils’ best record since 2014.
The former Texas A&M defensive coordinator immediately helped turn around Duke’s defense as the Blue Devils allowed 17.7 fewer points per game in 2022 than they did in 2021. Under Elko’s watch, Duke returned to a bowl game for the first time since 2018, defeating UCF in the Military Bowl 30-13.
